Improving employment, learning and local economic activity
Employment programs
Neighbourhood Renewal's Employment Support Initiative and the Workforce Participation Program are linking residents with jobs, particularly in skill shortage areas. The Public Tenant Employment Program is helping residents find work with contractors who have tendered to deliver housing maintenance and upgrade works.
Since Neighbourhood Renewal began in Broadmeadows, these schemes have helped nine residents find jobs. In 2006/07 they will help a further five residents find work.
Community Jobs Program
The Community Jobs Program, which operated until 2004-05, found jobs for over 3,775 participants, including 851 Neighbourhood Renewal residents. In Broadmeadows, a total of 19 residents found work through the program.
Social enterprises
Neighbourhood Renewal is supporting social enterprises that create jobs and training opportunities for Neighbourhood Renewal residents. The enterprises generally employ people as trainees for 12 months or less and then help them into work or further training. In Broadmeadows, the Home Ground Gardening enterprise is delivering landscaping, fencing and maintenance services to local properties.
"Try A Trade"
This pilot program, which is run by Kangan Batman TAFE, is giving young people the opportunity to try different trades.
One Stop Job Shop
Residents are being supported to find work through the weekly One Stop Job Shop. Job Network agencies, Centrelink, Workforce Plus and the Employment Coordinator are available on a rostered basis at Olsen Place.
Learning clubs for primary schools
Neighbourhood Renewal has joined up with local primary schools and Melbourne City Mission to set up an after-school learning club.
