Doveton Neighbourhood Renewal began in 2003 and will continue until 2011.



Neighbourhood Renewal encourages community participation

Residents are working with local providers to help identify and develop strategies that respond to local issues.
Five Action Groups have been established and are focussing on: Crime and Safety, Housing and Urban Design, Employment and Learning, Early Years, and Access and Participation. In addition a Community Newsletter is being produced by residents.

In addition a Community Newsletter is being produced by residents.Neighbourhood Renewal is working alongside local schools, projects and services to improve access to services for young children and their parents. Helping improve children's health, development, learning and wellbeing is a key focus.Neighbourhood Renewal values and encourages the participation of residents - young and old - in project activity. A strong link has been established with local schools. Local students put their artistic skills to the test in preparing artwork for a visual style competition led by Neighbourhood Renewal.More than 100 public housing properties were improved through Neighbourhood Renewal in the first 12 months of the project. Improvements made to both the inside and outside of properties included the establishment of new gardens. The program is being run again this year.Neighbourhood Renewal is working with local schools to help improve children's health, development, learning and wellbeing.Neighbourhood Renewal is working with local residents and the police to change perceptions about community and individual safety through local Crime and Safety Action Planning meetings. Students from Doveton North, Doveton Heights and Eumemmerring Primary Schools all participate in the Police in Schools Program.Residents have been employed in the areas of home maintenance, furniture restoration and gardening through community jobs programs which have been providing job training and work experience for local residents.Neighbourhood Renewal is creating opportunities for residents to spend time together while developing their skills. Computers have been donated to local neighbourhood houses to provide greater opportunities for computer use across the community.Opportunities for strengthening shared activity between local services, groups, churches and clubs and the common use of facilities is being encouraged through Neighbourhood Renewal. An office base has been established in the Doveton Neighbourhood Learning Centre that hosts a range of community activities on a weekly basis including art, cooking, dancing and bowls.

Progress against the six objectives

The six key objectives of Neighbourhood Renewal are:

  • increased pride and participation
  • improved employment, learning and local economic activity
  • enhanced housing and environment
  • reduced crime and greater safety
  • better health and wellbeing
  • increased access to services and improved government responsiveness
