Setting the scene

Fitzroy Neighbourhood Renewal began in 2002 and will continue until 2009.

Neighbourhood Renewal is providing education and learning opportunities

The InfoXchange

The InfoXchange "Reach for the Clouds" project and the eACE (Atherton Community Enterprise) projects were launched at the Atherton Gardens Community Centre. The project aims to facilitate access to information technologies by Atherton Gardens residents who may otherwise lack the financial capacity to purchase and maintain computer equipment and electronic communication services.

The InfoXchange Neighbourhood Renewal is providing residents with a better standard of housing. The Office of Housing is undertaking a comprehensive upgrade program over the next five years to provide every unit in the Fitzroy high rises with a new kitchen, bathroom, internal laundry, carpet, internal paint, and sprinkler system.Neighbourhood Renewal is piloting employment creation in the delivery of Office of Housing contracted services. Real work opportunities are being created for high-rise tenants to provide cleaning services in their local community.Extensive refurbishments have occurred to the foyer of the Fitzroy buildings. New walkways have been built, security screens installed, upgrades made to the lifts and waiting areas improved. These changes are designed to enhance the visual amenity of the estate and improve the personal safety and wellbeing of residents.Extensive work has been undertaken to improve the local urban environment. Community gardens have been established and trees planted to enhance the local area. In addition a sophisticated solar hot water heater system has been installed on the roof of the high rise providing residents with an energy efficient supply of hot water.
