Setting the scene

The Neighbourhood Renewal project in Werribee (Heathdale) began in July 2003 and will continue until 2011.

Neighbourhood Renewal is enhancing the physical environment

Neighbourhood Renewal encourages all members of the community to worktogether to take action on issues to improve their neighbourhood. The Physical Environment Working Group is enhancing the Heathdale Glen Orden Wetland, other parks and playgrounds, local public transport facilities and entrances into the estate.

The community has identified Health and Wellbeing as a priority and aims to create recreational opportunities for all within Heathdale. A newly acquired street-surfer bus will provide youth with art and recreational opportunities, a women's group has been set up, and a community tool shed is proposed.Members from the Pride and Participation Working Group are involved in a number of projects to improve the physical environment. Removing rubbish from the Healthdale Glen- Orden Wetlands helps the local wildlife and improves the appearance of the area.Neighbourhood Renewal is improving the safety and security of public houses with better pathways, the installation of sensor lights, gates and security doors, and the construction of fences and carports to improve the physical environment. Some of these works are being done through the Community Jobs Program where local unemployed people are offered the opportunity to learn landscaping and fencing skills.Residents are surveyed to discover what is important to them and what they would like to see happen within Heathdale. The vision tree (background) translates residents' visions for Heathdale and was made by students from Glen Orden Primary School and a community artist. Residents also conducted a community safety audit in early 2004 that is now being followed up by the Safety and Security Working Group.
